Large Grant Expression of Interest
The Honor Frost Foundation invites initial expressions of interest for grants over £70,000. Information on other grants is available here.
The deadline for Expression of Interest forms for large grants is April 1st, annually.
If accepted, a full project proposal to be submitted in June. Final decisions will be made September.
HFF strongly recommends applying early for these grants to allow time for feedback on your application.
Grants are broadly considered within the three categories listed below. This funding can be used as the total direct costs of the work, a contribution to a larger project, or costs to seed a pilot study. Our grants only support direct costs but in the case of institutional applications overheads may be considered.
Please note that our grant programme is increasingly competitive. The Foundation has funds to support a limited number of applications in each funding cycle, only awarded to those applications deemed by the trustees to be of the highest standard. Repeat funding is considered for outstanding projects. However, unless there are exceptional circumstances, repeat funding will only apply for up to a maximum of three years.

The Foundation primarily supports regional projects which focus on maritime archaeology or underwater cultural heritage undertaken in the countries where Honor Frost worked. Broadly, this is the eastern Mediterranean, specifically Cyprus, Lebanon, Syria and also Egypt including the Red Sea. The Foundation is keen to support projects which will foster strong collaborations with regional partners, particularly those with local training opportunities. The Foundation also offers broader support for activities in this field, including training and workshops, conferences with a regional involvement, conservation work, museum exhibitions, public engagement and education.
In exceptional cases, the Foundation is also interested in developing the discipline and the scope of maritime archaeology and underwater cultural heritage beyond the region. It may consider applications that support the development of new technologies and/or methodologies on a global scale, and in some cases research projects that were aligned with Honor Frost’s research interests beyond the immediate regional scope.
