Scholarships
Support for developing education at Masters, Doctoral and Post Doctoral levels is offered by the Foundation in conjunction with a variety of international academic institutions (see below) to students and scholars from the region (Lebanon, Cyprus, Syria and Egypt).
The Foundation also offers a PhD scholarship to enable students from the region to undertake doctoral research in maritime archaeology at a university of their choice.
Successful candidates must demonstrate a genuine interest in maritime archaeology and would be expected to develop the subject in their home country upon completion of their studies.

American University of Beirut- Marine Sciences and Culture program
The Honor Frost Foundation offers an annual scholarship for Lebanese nationals or permanent residents of Lebanon to attend the Marine Sciences and Culture program at the American University of Beirut. Interested candidates are requested to submit applications to the program coordinator (see below).
Students will be registered at the American University of Beirut as visiting scholars, and provided with access to a variety of academic and electronic resources through the university. They will be given a general background in a variety of subjects related to maritime archaeology and geomorphology, and be supervised by a panel of experts from the HFF Lebanon Team and AUB. After successfully undertaking the program, students are awarded a certificate of completion.
The program consists of four MSCU courses which are detailed in the AUB student handbook. These include a fieldwork course that provides students with a hands-on experience in geophysical and diving survey techniques. The AUB home page of the MSCU Minor can be found here.
Entry Requirements:
The selection process will be conducted through a ranking system for applicants based on previous archaeological experience and dedication to the promotion and sustenance of archaeology in Lebanon. Experience in maritime archaeology projects is preferred but not required. There are no formal barriers to entry, and all interested persons are encouraged to apply.
Maintenance:
Successful applicants are expected to maintain at least a 72% average throughout the year, and to participate regularly in all courses, trainings and workshops associated with the program. They are also required to submit full reports at the end of each semester, along with a web profile for the HFF website.

Alexandria Centre for Maritime Archaeology & Underwater Cultural Heritage- Diploma
In 2009 the Alexandria Centre for Maritime Archaeology & Underwater Cultural Heritage was established as a European Union project under the EU-Tempus III Programme. The project aimed to create a specialized center for postgraduate studies which provides education and training at different levels in aspects of maritime and underwater archaeology, and to develop a Postgraduate Diploma and Master programmes in Maritime Archaeology and Underwater Cultural Heritage, designed and structured in accordance with EU standards.
The Centre offers a Postgraduate Diploma and Master of Arts degrees in Maritime Archaeology and Underwater Cultural Heritage, designed and structured in accordance with EU standards.
The programme aims to provide graduates from different backgrounds with a sound theoretical and methodological foundation in the investigation, interpretation, and management of the maritime and underwater archaeological resource within its wider context. Hence, participants in the programme would be provided with the basis for a professional career in this field or a sound foundation for further research.
The Foundation offers four scholarships to fund Diploma students (for one year), with two scholarships dedicated to the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities employees. The Foundation will also fund additional travel costs for non-resident students.
Honor Frost Foundation Scholarship 2025/2025
The Alexandria Centre for Maritime Archaeology & Underwater Cultural Heritage(CMAUCH) is pleased to announce the continuation of the Honor Frost Foundation Scholarship for the Diploma program in Maritime Archaeology for the 2024/2025 academic year.
The scholarship covers tuition fees and a monthly stipend of £150. The stipend is not offered to Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities employees.
It aims to encouraging serious and deserving students to peruse graduate studies in the field of Maritime Archaeology at the CMAUCH.
Scholarships are available for students from the HFF Region:Egypt, Cyprus, Lebanon, and Syria.

- A good command of English is essential.

University of Southampton
This scholarship is aimed at supporting nationals of Cyprus, Lebanon, Egypt, and Syria (only) to apply for studentships at the University of Southampton, Centre for Maritime Archaeology, to undertake Masters or Doctoral studies. Studentships are offered annually and candidates are requested to submit applications to the University of Southampton (see below).
Students will be registered at the University of Southampton and supervised by experts in the field of maritime archaeology. See below for more information on the MA and PhD Scholarships available.
MA SCHOLARSHIP
The MA/ MSc Scholarship requires: a good 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent) in either archaeology or a related discipline. You must be a national of Cyprus, Lebanon, Egypt or Syria.
The MA/ MSc scholarship is tenable for one year, at an annual stipend of £19,500 with an additional travel fund of £1500, which can be drawn as required during your study. Tuition fees will also be paid directly to the University at the appropriate fee rate. There may also be the opportunity to continue to PhD, fully funded, for a further three years on completion of the MA/MSc.
The successful candidate must demonstrate a genuine interest in maritime archaeology of the eastern Mediterranean region and would be expected to develop the subject in their home country upon their return. Successful candidates will be required to write their Masters dissertation on a subject relevant to the HFF regional remit. They will also be required to submit a report to the HFF at the end of their study and help in the promotion of the Foundation and its activities whenever possible, including social media. The successful candidate will be encouraged to publish the results of their research as appropriate.

Please also arrange for two academic references to be sent independently by the deadline. All material should be sent to admissions@soton.ac.uk
Please note all candidates will also need to apply to the University of Southampton through the normal application procedure in order to be eligible for the scholarship. Should you be offered an award, we may require you to attend an intensive English language course either prior to or during the award period. The costs of this may be covered by the Foundation.

The successful candidate must demonstrate a genuine interest in maritime archaeology and would be expected to develop the subject in their home country upon completion of their studies and on return to their country.

- Details of identified supervisors and why they are appropriate for this role.

- Outline of your doctoral research (1500 words max).
- A sample of written work (4,000 words max, examples of this are an article or masters level essay).

As a condition for receiving a scholarship you will be required to submit an annual report on your progress along with a summary for the HFF website, and as feasible contribute towards the Foundation’s activities during the duration of your studies.

University of Southampton
The Foundation’s mission is to promote the advancement and research of maritime archaeology in the eastern Mediterranean. The Foundation offers PhD scholarships in maritime archaeology to students from the primary regions where Honor worked, to undertake research at the University of Southampton. This PhD award is only available to nationals of Cyprus, Lebanon, Egypt or Syria.
Students will be registered at the University of Southampton and supervised by experts in the field of maritime archaeology. Students can undertake the degree in situ or via the university’s distance learning scheme or a blend of both, dependent upon visa requirements
HFF Entry requirements
The PhD scholarship requires a good 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent) and a Masters in either archaeology or a related discipline (preferably maritime archaeology). You must be a national of Cyprus, Lebanon, Egypt or Syria.
The PhD scholarship is tenable for a maximum of three years, commencing September 2023, at an annual stipend of £19,500 (or equivalent if based overseas) with an additional travel fund of £1500 per annum, which can be drawn as required during your study. Tuition fees will also be paid directly to the University at the appropriate fee rate.
The successful candidate must demonstrate a genuine interest in maritime archaeology of the region and would be expected to develop the subject in their home country upon their return at least for the equivalent time they were recipients of the scholarship (i.e. minimum three years).
During their doctoral research, the successful candidate will be required to submit annual reports on their progress to the HFF and contribute towards the Foundation’s activities, including supporting the annual lecture, promoting the Foundation and its activities whenever possible, including social media. The successful candidate will be encouraged to publish the results of their research in the HFF Publication Research Series
